We offer two types of hand hewn beams: Decorative Beams and Structural Beams.
Decorative Beams
Our decorative beams are nothing more than standard structural beams sawed in half, lengthwise. The advantage of using decorative beams may be problematic in the area of headroom, or the additional weight that a full size structural beam may add to an existing structure. These decorative beams may be used as ceiling beams or wall posts.
Structural Beams
Our structural hand hewn beams are cut to your specification and are meant to be used as part of your building structure. We would
like to recommend that if the beams are to be used as a floor joist or part of the ceiling where sheathing will be applied, that one side
of the beam would be sawed lengthwise to give you one smooth flat surface to apply the sheathing, with the other three sides remaining
hand hewn.
As with any of our beams, we don�t saw or hew our beams until we receive your order. This practice helps to insure uniform color when you receive your beam.

Shipping
We use commercial haulers as well as our own trucks for shipping. The shipping costs are determined by the weight and distance the goods must travel. Upon your request, the hauler will notify you before delivery. It is recommended that you supply an individual or two to help in the off loading process. Our beams are packaged in cardboard sleeves and are banded with steel straps. Upon receipt of your beams, we recommend that you remove the strapping and cardboard to allow your beams to dry, so that they do not mildew. If you wish, you may also personally pick up your order here at Maine Timber Works, Rte. 27, Rome, Maine.
