Historical Information
Eastern White Pine has played an important role in the development and economy of Maine since 1605, when Captain George Weymouth of the British Royal Navy brought back samples to England for display. Shortage of ship masts in Europe led to England's Broad Arrow Policy in 1691, whereby Eastern White Pine, 24 inches or more in diameter within three miles of water was marked with the "Mark of the Broad Arrow"; such trees became known as "King's Pine." What was also good for the Royal Navy was also important to the local Maine ship builders and lumbermen, as you can imagine many of the King's Pine found local use here in New England. The wood is light in color, soft, not heavy and easily worked. The wood has been used traditionally in cabinet making, furniture, interior and exterior finish, and boat planking.
